Surgical Treatment of Achalasia of the Esophagus

Abstract
Acalasia is a disorder of the esophagus, characterized principally by dysphagia resulting from lack of effective forward peristaltic movement of the body of the esophagus and failure of relaxation of cardio-esophageal junction. It is probably caused by an extraesbphageal vagal lesion, either of peripheral vagus nerve or of it¢¥s dorsal motor nucleus. During the period of June 1975, to June 1976, 3 cases of acalasia were treated surgically utilizing modified Heller¢¥s operation with satisfactory results at our institution.
